Leon Costello, Montana State University’s new director of Bobcat Athletics, will be introduced during a press conference set at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 31, in Ballroom A of MSU’s Strand Union Building.
Costello, who is currently deputy director of athletics at South Dakota State University, plans to begin his duties at MSU on June 15. MSU hired Costello on May 11.
A native of Fairbank, Iowa, Costello played basketball for and graduated from Loras College in 1998 with a bachelor's degree in physical education and sport science. He has a master's degree in sports management from Western Illinois University in 2002, where he was named director of athletic marketing and promotions in January 2003.
Costello has been at South Dakota State University since 2010 and was promoted to deputy director in July 2014. Among his duties at SDSU, Costello oversees the day-to-day operations of the athletic department and directs the implementation of the five-year strategic plan. To date, he has worked on all facets of the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex and Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium; including planning, design, fundraising and premium seating sales. He also manages the athletic marketing, broadcast services, development, sports information and ticket operations in the athletic department, and serves as the department liaison for Under Armour and Jackrabbit Sports Properties, a division of Learfield Sports.
Costello and his wife, Heather, are the parents of three children: daughter, Cailin, and sons, Michael and Griffin.
