BOZEMAN -- The Montana State University Family Financial Literacy Project conducted its third annual summer educator's conference June 13-17 in Bozeman, Mont. The project has been funded annually by Take Charge America, Inc. since June 2001 to develop a semester-long senior level family finance course "Take Charge of Your Finances."

A unique aspect of the financial literacy project is the training. Each year, Take Charge America, Inc. subsidizes the cost to provide educator training. This year, 61 educators attended the conference from communities throughout Montana, Wyoming and North Dakota. At the training, the educators attended finance workshops from local experts, received curriculum materials, and the skills and confidence to teach the materials.

Since the project's inception, 131 educators have attended a training session. Fourteen of these educators have implemented personal finance semester courses into their curriculum. In 2003-2004, the curriculum was taught an average of 66 hours per student to over 2,500 students. In November 2003, the project was recognized as the 2003 Outstanding Educational Program by the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education.
