Summer conferences in Great Falls and Billings will offer support and ideas to grandparents who are raising their grandchildren, a growing sector of the Montana population.

Grandparents find themselves raising their grandchildren for many reasons, from military deployment or incarceration to the death of a parent, said Sandra Bailey, Montana State University Extension family and human development specialist. The conferences and Extension's Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Project are designed to help grandparents in any situation better understand the resources that are available and the issues that are particular to their parenting situation.

The Billings conference takes place June 2, and the Great Falls conference June 23. Registration is $15 for a single grandparent and $25 for a grandparent couple. Other rates apply for teachers, social service agencies and others. Childcare is available for grandparents attending, and limited scholarships are available to assist grandparents in attending the conference.

The one-day conferences are sponsored by MSU Extension's Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Project, the Montana Department of Health and Human Services and Montana AARP.
