BOZEMAN -- To help Montanans prepare for spring and summer gardening and landscaping, Montana State University Extension is offering two packets of gardening publications along with seeds of Montana's state flower.

The landscape packet includes the "Montana Planter's Handbook: Tree and Shrub Selection Guide," which provides a description of trees, shrubs and vines for use in Montana landscapes. This guide includes 64 pages with hundreds of illustrations. Plant size, hardiness ratings, landscape value, popular cultivars and the shortcomings of each plant are included.

In addition, the landscape packet includes over a dozen MontGuides on a variety of topics including successful lawns, poisonous plants, minimizing deer damage, tree problem diagnosis, pruning fruit trees, important apple diseases and recommended varieties, fire-resistant plants for Montana landscapes, yard and garden water management, and growing lilacs; spruce, peach and plum trees, shrub roses, and trees and shrubs from seed.

The gardening packet includes "A Montana Gardener's Book of Days," a journal and reference for Montana gardeners. It includes a perpetual calendar, a list of reminders for general gardening activities, gardening tips and space for your own notes.

The gardening packet also includes more than a dozen MontGuides on gardening topics such as planting a successful home vegetable garden, deer-resistant ornamental plants for your garden, vegetable seed and transplant schedules for the garden or container, hotbeds and cold frames, choosing biennials and perennials, harvesting and saving garden seeds, yard and garden water management, and growing raspberries, garlic, annual flowers and strawberries, tomatoes, asparagus, juneberries, heirloom vegetables, herbs and rhubarb.

Also included in both the landscape and gardening packets are seeds for Montana's state flower, the Bitterroot, along with instructions for planting and growing them.

Those who purchase either of the packets can get updates to all of the Montguides included in the packet sent to them free for one year.

The packets cost $15 each and can be ordered by calling MSU Extension at (406) 994-3273,
