The Department of Health and Human Development will host Katie Bark, director of the Montana Team Nutrition Program (MTN), to discuss implementing a recess before lunch (RBL) schedule in Montana elementary schools, Dec. 11 from 1-2 p.m. in Herrick Hall 117. Bark has worked with schools over the past seven years to help implement recess before lunch (RBL) across Montana. MTN recently completed a pilot project with four elementary schools that implemented an RBL schedule to evaluate its impact. Positive preliminary results were seen in respect to decreased food and beverage waste and overall acceptance by staff and students. In January 2008, a state-wide online survey to Montana elementary principals was conducted to evaluate the challenges, benefits and factors essential for successful implementation of RBL.

Bark will review the results of this research on a recess before lunch schedule in relation to supporting students in improving their nutrition intake at lunch and academic performance in the afternoon.
