Two new courses offered this fall by Montana State University's Extended University will introduce people to social media and help small businesses and non-profits build a Web site.

"Social Media: What's the Big Deal?" will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Oct. 5, on the MSU campus. The course gives an overview of social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter, and covers their impact. The course is designed for those who are unfamiliar with or new to social media. The course is $49.

"Build Your Website NOW!" will be offered at MSU during the evenings of Oct. 12, 13 and 19. The course is designed for small businesses and non-profits who want to create a basic Web presence complete with photos, menus, prices and other information. By the end of the course, every student can have a basic Web site up and running. The cost is $98.

The instructor for both courses is Jake Cook, co-founder of Sweet Onion Creations and Digital Wax Works, where he heads up research and implementation of online marketing and social media strategies. Cook is also an adjunct professor in MSU's College of Business and a writer for MarketingforHighTech.com and "Fast Company" magazine's blog on design trends.
