Marc James Mueller, German professor in Montana State University's Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, will introduce the Bozeman Film Festival showing of the German film, "When We Leave," scheduled for 7 p.m., Thursday, April 21, at the Emerson Center for the Arts and Culture.

This film was awarded the Best Film Award at the Tribeca Film Festival and the Calgary International Film Festival, and received two German Film Awards (Best Film and Best Leading Actress). The film was also the German entry for the Best Foreign Film Award for the 2010 Academy Awards.

The provocative film from director Feo Aladag tells the story of German-born Umay, who flees from her oppressive marriage in Istanbul taking her young son, Cem, with her. She hopes to find a better life with her family in Berlin, but her unexpected arrival creates intense conflict with her family, trapped in their conventions. They are torn between their love for her and the traditional values of their community. The film, which is rated NR, runs for two hours and is fully subtitled.

Mueller will also facilitate a discussion following the film.
