Reading K-12 Minor

If you want to impact students in the most fundamental and important way, help students learn to love reading, become an expert in the complex process of learning to read, and give yourself an advantage when seeking a teaching job, then you should earn a Reading Minor from Montana State University.

Reading K-12 - Minor

MSU’s Reading K – 12 Minor equips graduates with a deep understanding of reading acquisition and language development so that they may expertly serve K-12 students. Course topics address phonemic awareness, phonics, literature, writing, assessment, comprehension, morphology, methodology, and literacy leadership skills.

MSU’s literacy faculty rely on up-to-date research by established academics to ensure our students learn relevant and current best practices, based on science of the reading brain. Among the resources used are the Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading, published by the International Dyslexia Association. Successful completion of the K-12 Reading Minor results in eligibility for a State of Montana Reading Endorsement. Those wishing to earn a Reading Minor must also complete a teaching major in another field: https://www.montana.edu/education/advising/curriculum.html.

The Reading Minor consists of eight classes. However, for Elementary Education majors, four of those are already required, so the Minor involves only four additional classes.
