Carbon County

Nestled in the Beartooth Mountains, with the Pryor Mountains to the east, and the Wyoming border to the south, you'll find Carbon County. The county was created on March 4, 1895, and according to the 2021 census estimate, the population is around 10,847. Agriculture and tourism are Carbon county's two most recognized economic industries.

4-H & Youth Development

4-H Interstate Exchange

Over the past two years, the Carbon County 4-H Interstate Exchange program raised money to travel to Delaware in 2022 and host a group of 4-H youth from Delaware in 2023. This past summer, eight 4-H members from Delaware, along with two chaperones, visited Carbon County to experience the Montana life. During their travels, the group visited a local family farm, learned different ways of irrigating crops, toured the Stillwater Mine, Blue Water Fish Hatchery, and the Pryor Mountain Wind Farm. It was a fun week of learning and exploring for the whole group.

Family & Consumer Science

Community Partnership

In fall 2023, MSU Extension Carbon County is partnering with the Carbon and Stillwater counties Community & Senior Programs to offer Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) classes at the Red Lodge Senior Center. SAIL is an evidence-based exercise program designed to help aging adults (65+) improve strength and balance. This program is also designed as a fall prevention program and gives participants the opportunity to socialize and meet new people.

4-H Foods Workshops

In the summer of 2023, 4-H members participated in two food-related workshops about microwave cooking and cake decorating. During the microwave cooking workshop, participants made apple crisps and omelets in a mug, and some indicated they would make it again. At the cake decorating workshop, participants made monsters and ducks out of cupcakes. One participant indicated they got to try new techniques. Both of these workshops provided fun and learning for youth, and were fun to teach.
