About National History Day in Montana

As of 2023, Montana State University-Bozeman is the new "home" for National History Day in Montana (NHD MT) which is an affiliate of the National History Day© (NHD) nonprofit education organization headquartered at College Park, Maryland.

NHD's main program is a social studies competition where students in grades 6-12 choose a historic topic related to an annual theme, develop a thesis, and conduct extensive research using sources such as libraries, archives, museums, and interviews. Students then present individually or with a group, in the form of a documentary, exhibit, paper, performance, or website. Students may participate in school wide or local competitions, then a regional competition, and a state competition. The top two projects in each category, individual and group, in the Junior (grades 6-8) and Senior (grades 9-12) division at state, qualify for the national competition in Maryland which is in June.

NHD MT is sponsored by the Department of Education in the College of Education, Health, and Human Development at Montana State University-Bozeman. We are thrilled to have the support of the Education Deptartment Chair, Dr. Sarah Pennington, a former NHD teacher, and the College of EHHD Dean, Dr. Tricia Seifert, a NHD alum.

The National Office estimates that "NHD reaches more than half a million students and tens of thousands of teachers each year via its international student history contest and its wide range of teacher professional development programs, curriculum tools, and other educational activities." Learn more about the effectiveness of NHD. We are excited to offer NHD again to Montana's sixth-twelfth grade students and educators.

NHD MT will be active for the 2023-2024 school year

We are offering virtual professional development starting Sept. 5th from 4:30-5:30pm via WebEx! Register here.

NHD MT will also be presenting at the following in-person events. Please introduce yourself!

If you are interested in learning more about NHD, we enourage you to visit the main National website www.nhd.org which has an abundance of information regarding the Contest and Teacher Resources. We will be building our resources throughout this summer and next year. We are using this NHD MT Google Site for PD with teachers over the 23-24 school year - check it out!

We also recommend reviewing the revised Montana Social Studies Content Standards (2021) to start planning how your grade level standards or the K-12 Social Studies skills align to NHD. There are many connections!

The Annual State Competition will be held April 6, 2024 at the MSU-Bozeman University campus. The 2024 contest theme is: Turning Points in History!

We are seeking out both grants and donations to establish a strong foundation for NHD MT. Funds are budgeted for operational costs, educational outreach, the regional and state competitions, professional development, and mini-grants that support schools in participating. We truly believe that NHD MT should be a "social studies and literacy program for ALL" Montana students!
