ITEM No. 4 – RECOMMENDATION – Variable Laminated Timber Experimental Structure

Presenter: Elizabeth Cramblet, Campus Planner

The School of Architecture in conjunction with Tyler Swingle, a visiting scholar, request approval to install an experimental structure outside of Cheever Hall. Tyler Swingle has been doing material research on bending Cross Laminated Timber and would like to see how his Variable Laminated Timber (VLT) experimental structure withstands different exterior moisture levels. The VLT structure will be installed in an existing planter box located on the south side of Cheever Hall for one year.
A research assistant position will be involved in the research process and will be frequently monitoring the structure. All costs associated with this project will be covered by the School of Architecture. A QR code will be posted to provide information about the project. The structure will be removed in one year, but the supporting foundation will be left in place to allow for the installation of future projects. This project has the approval of Ralph Johnson, the Director of the School of Architecture, and UFPB Chair Dean Royce Smith.

Duane Morris motioned to approve the Variable Laminated Timber Experimental Structure. Tom Rogers seconded the motion, and the Variable Laminated Timber Experimental Structure was approved unanimously.
