Julia Haggerty

Julia Haggerty runs the Resources and Communities Research Group, a highly collaborative lab that researches the socioeconomic impacts of resource development on local communities. She currently mentors four Ph.D. students, all of whom are women working in male-dominated fields. Haggerty's integrated research approach blends theory and practice to provide relevant, tractable results to rural communities. In her research group, she cultivates an environment of positivity, inclusiveness and intellectual collaboration through structured lab activities and retreats, and empowers women to develop professional portfolios that address individual needs, interests and career goals. Haggerty’s accolades illustrate her widespread impact on the status of women at Montana State University. She was recognized nationally in 2015 as one of the top 100 inspiring women in STEM and has been invited to participate in the National Academies Panel on Unconventional Hydrocarbons. In 2017, she delivered a lecture to MSU’s Women In Science and Engineering club titled, “Trade Secrets: Essential Skills Most Advisers Can’t or Won’t Teach You” to a packed audience. Haggerty has shown extraordinary leadership and has worked tirelessly to make MSU and the earth sciences department places of excellence.
