Sarah Vowell, a 1993 MSU graduate and an accomplished author, journalist and social commentator, has deepened our understanding of American history and politics. For nearly 20 years, she has been a leader and mentor for programs helping empower young people through writing. Vowell grew up in Bozeman and at MSU, where her father worked for the engineering college. She graduated from MSU with a bachelor’s degree in modern languages and literature. She has been a frequent speaker on campus and has used her New York Times column to relay the importance of public land-grant universities. Vowell is an accomplished author, including bestsellers “Unfamiliar Fishes” and “Lafayette in the Somewhat United States.” She has written for numerous publications, including The New York Times, Village Voice and Salon.
