2016-2017 Recipients 

Overview:

The Small Grant Program aims to be responsive to the needs of Montana High Schools.  The awards will provide support to educators to enable students to learn computing skills and to expose students to careers in computer science.

Small Grant Awards

The Gianforte School of Computing will make several awards during the 2016-2017 school year. Grants will be in three categories: 1) Program Development; 2) Training; 3) Equipment. We expect to award:

Program Development                  Grants up to $3,000
Training                                       Grants up to $1000
Equipment                                   Grants up to $1000

 What will be funded?

 Program Development - Awards can be used to develop or enhance:

A computer science class
A computer science related club (e.g. Code club, robotics club, etc.)
An on-going event (e.g. hosting a summit, competition, or training)

 Training - Awards to support teachers, volunteers, and club advisors. Can be used for travel, registration fees, to attend conferences, summits, training events, etc.

 Equipment - Awards to support computer science related courses, events, clubs, etc.

 Who can apply?

We invite grant applications from any Montana High School that does not already offer computer science opportunities for students or from any Montana High School that asprires to enhance existing computer science opportunities at their school. Priority will be given to schools who do not offer existing opportunities.

 Important Dates

 The deadline to apply is October 15th, 2016.   Grant recipients will be notified by November 14th, 2016. Funds must be expended by August 1, 2017.

 Reports and Evaluation

 Grant recipients will be asked to submit a final report and an expense record by August 15th.  Reports will belong to the School of Computing.

 How to apply

Your proposal will be evaluated based on how well your application meets the following criteria.

 Proposal Criteria

  1. Proposals should describe projects that will benefit Montana students and/or educators
  2. Grant applications are accepted from teachers or administrators from a Montana high school or vocational school that reaches grades 9-12.
  3. The overall goal is to be responsive to the needs of Montana high schools, to support educators, to enable students to learn computing skills, and to expose students to careers in computer science.  This can be achieved through: 1) new programs/projects; 2) training to support teachers, volunteers, and club advisors to provide expertise to support a new program/project or existing program or project at the school; 3) required equipment to support and enhance a new or existing program/project.
  4. A school may submit a grant application for one category (e.g. equipment award).
  5. Proposals must include how the program will be sustained into the future.
  6. Priority will be given to schools who do not offer existing opportunities.

Budget Criteria

  1. Program Development grants are available for up to $3,000 and up to $1,000 for Training and Equipment grants.
  2. The budget must be clear and spending justified.
  3. Explain, if any, monetary (other grants and donations) or non-monetary (“in-kind”) contributions that have been received for the program/project.  In-kind contributions include volunteer time and donated materials.  Precise monetary value of in-kind contributions does not need to be included.
