Disability Rights are Civil Rights - Paul Grossman, J.D.

In his 40 years with the US Department of Education, Office for Civil Rights (OCR), Paul has been a first-person witness to the development of equal educational opportunity (diversity, equity, inclusion, and access) in America.  He has observed our civil rights histories as a continuum, with each stage building upon the wisdom and accomplishments of earlier movements and each stage more intersectional than its predecessor. As featured in the Academy Award nominated documentary Crip Camp, the Section 504 sit-in, held in San Francisco, was the longest occupation of a Federal building in US history.  The disability community has come a long way since the sit-in and passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), but it has a surprising long way to go.  With so far to go, equity, inclusion, and access-based support from administrators, faculty and staff is the single most necessary and promising pathway to equality for students with disabilities.  Faculty still need to understand the “triple diversity value” (gender, ethnicity and type of disability) that students with disabilities bring to the classroom. Moreover, the advances in learning opportunities for this community through reasonable accommodation and auxiliary aids when implemented through universal design in curriculum and instruction, offers the promise of more effective instruction and evaluation for all students.  Finally, Paul will give concrete examples of how, over the course of 22 years of teaching law, he transformed accommodations for students with disabilities into universal practices that benefitted all of his students.
