Program Learning Outcomes

1. Attain oral proficiency at the ACTFL Intermediate High Level.
2. Attain writing proficiency at the ACTFL Intermediate High Level.
3. Attain reading proficiency at the ACTFL Advanced-Mid Level.
4. Identify, describe, and analyze historical and cultural periods and trends.
5. Identify, analyze, and critique themes and rhetorical or cinematic techniques in different types and
genres of media (e.g., novels, poetry, historical documents, film, paintings, etc.).
6. Formulate a research question, locate and interpret relevant sources, and produce original
research.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)

1. Communicate thoughts, ideas, and opinions orally in the target language at the Intermediate-High level minimum (students in foreign language as a graduation requirement), Intermediate-Low level minimum (students in the minor), and Advanced-Low level minimum (students in the major or in the teacher certification program) as described by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency Guidelines.

2. Communicate thoughts, ideas, and opinions in writing in the target language at the Novice-Low level minimum (students taking a foreign language as a requirement), Intermediate-Low level minimum (students in the minor), and Advanced-Low level minimum (students in the major or in the teacher certification program) as described by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).

3. Recognize distinctive products and practices of the target culture and establish relationships between these and the perspectives (attitudes, values and beliefs) of the target culture.

4. Identify, synthesize, analyze and present bibliographical information in the form of an original research paper in the target language.

Latino U.S. through the lens of various disciplinary perspectives.
3. Attain effective and proficient communication skills in English and Spanish (or another language

spoken in Latin America) at the ACTFL Intermediate-Low Level.
4. Formulate a research question, locate and interpret relevant sources, and produce original

research about Latin American and Latino U.S.
