The UIT has partnered with InCommon to provide a free SSL certificate service for Montana State University.  Through this service, MSU employees may request a free SSL certificate for official MSU websites for which they are responsible.

To request a certificate

Please complete the request form at Incommon Request Form

The InCommon Certificate Service, created by and for the higher education community, provides unlimited SSL/TLS and client certificates to participating universities.  The certificates themselves are issued by Comodo.

Montana State University has already paid a membership fee to participate in this program so that it is easier than ever for MSU employees to acquire SSL certificates.

When installed on a web server, an SSL certificate activates the https protocol and allows secure connections from a web server to a browser. Typically, SSL is used to secure credit card transactions, data transfer and logins, and more recently is becoming the norm when securing many other sites.
