¡HOLA AMIGOS!

Info for incoming Spanish Students

If you are thinking of taking Spanish at MSU, classes fill up fast so read this before you come to your MSU orientation!!

What is your case?

"I have never had Spanish before" (see A)
"I have had some Spanish in High School" (see B)

"I have AP credits from the Spanish I took in High School" (see C)
"I have taken Spanish at another college; I am a transfer student" (see D)
"I have been abroad and know some Spanish, but never took any courses" (see E)
"I have been abroad and I have taken courses there" (see F)

A. If you have never had Spanish before, go to the Modern Languages main office in Reid 329.  You will just sign a form and we will enroll you in the course.  You can also call us (994-4448) before you come to Bozeman to pre-enroll and then sign the form when you are here.

B. If you had some Spanish in High School within the last five years, you need to take a placement exam in order to enroll in a Spanish class.  We have two options:

The CLEP exam

o       Costs $80 at MSU and is offered through Testing Services (994-6984).  You must pre-register and pay before taking the test.  Fill out this form and return it to:  Testing Services, 243 Reid Hall, Bozeman, MT 59717.

You can also take it at many other institutions in Montana and around the country.  For a location near you, check: www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/clep/about.html

o       Places the student in the appropriate course and gives him/her credits for lower-level courses.

o       Is based on a multiple-choice format.  Takes a maximum of 2 hours.

o       Results are obtained at the completion of the test and are good for one year.

o       Once you have the results take (Reid 329) or fax (994-6199) a copy to us and we will enroll you in the appropriate course.  The sooner the better!!

 The (free) Spanish placement exam

o       Only places you, does not give you credit for lower-level courses.

o       Only for students with one year of high school Spanish or less. If you’ve had more than one year of high school Spanish, you MUST take the CLEP test!

o       Is free of charge and is offered through us in Reid 329.

o       Students must show their high school transcript.

o       Is based on a short-essay format, takes a maximum of 2 hours, and results may take up to a week and are good for one year.

C. If you have AP credits from Spanish classes you took in High School, let us know (Reid 329, 994-4448) which test you took - Spanish Language or Spanish Literature - and we will enroll you in the appropriate course.  You must have received at least a "3" and you must have your results sent to the Registrar's Office (101 Montana Hall, Bozeman, MT 59717-2660).  If you want further information, you can contact Enrollment Services at 994-6617.  You can do this from your home.  The sooner the better!!

D. If you took Spanish at another college, show us (Reid 329) or fax us (994-6199) a copy of your transcript (it does not need to be official), and we will enroll you in the appropriate course.  You can do this from your home.  The sooner the better!!

E. If you have spent some time abroad but never took any instruction of Spanish, it is up to you to either take one of our placement exams (see B) or enroll in MLS 101, in which case you need to sign a form in Reid 329.

F. If you have spent some time abroad and have taken Spanish courses there, two things could happen:

  • If your courses were accredited by another university, show us (Reid 329) or fax us (994-6199) a copy of your transcript (it does not need to be official), and we will enroll       you in the appropriate course.  You can do this from home.  The sooner the better!!

  • If your courses have not been accredited by another U.S. institution, you will need to take one of our placement exams (see B).

Native speakers of Spanish need to talk to the Spanish coordinator.
