Q: How do I sign up for individual tutoring? How do I find drop-in tutoring?
A: Go to www.MSUSmartyCats.com. Click “Find a SmartyCats Tutor” and log in. Then choose your class from the drop-down menu, and you’ll see a list of upcoming tutoring appointments and drop-in sessions. From here you can book an individual appointment or find a drop-in session that fits your schedule.

Q: How many courses do you have tutors for?
A: We offer tutoring for 385 different courses in 70 different disciplines.
Q: What if there are no tutors for my class?
A: If you don’t find a tutor during your search, click “Request a Tutor,” and we’ll get back to you. Ask your professor to recommend a former student, and we’ll do our best to hire that person. Meantime, go to your professor’s office hours, visit with your TA, and study with others in your class.
Q: What does tutoring cost?
A: All drop-in tutoring is free. Individual tutoring costs $2 an hour. When you are ready to book an appointment, buy a 5-session tutoring pass by clicking “Add Funds” on the SmartyCats website.
Q: Do I earn Champ Change points for attending tutoring?
A: Yes! 1000 Champ Change points are awarded each time you check into individual or drop-in tutoring.
Q: How do I check into tutoring?
A: On the SmartyCats home page click "Check into Tutoring.” Checking in is required, because it is how we keep track of tutoring demand and it is how our tutors get paid.
Q: How can tutoring benefit me?
A: Everyone wants to do their best! A tutor can clarify concepts from class, work through problems with you, and make learning more enjoyable.
Q: I want to become a tutor. How do I apply?
Q: What qualifications are required in order to be a tutor?
- You need to be a current MSU student.
- You need to have earned a 3.5 or higher in the subjects you want to tutor. You also need to have taken these courses at MSU.
- You need to have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.
- You need to obtain a signature from a department chair or a faculty member who teaches each of your courses.
