Fashion Revue
Rules:
- Open to all Cascade County 4-H members enrolled in the Sewing and Textiles project.
- Age divisions include:
- Cloverbuds (Participation/non-competitive)
- Juniors: 8-13 years old
- Seniors: 14-18 years old
- Garment modeled was constructed, reconstructed, hand-knitted, or crocheted during the current 4-H year.
- Contestants may enter up to one garment in each category.
- Participants must include a 100 word or less narrative to be read while they are modeling their garment. Tips to writing the narrative below.
- Participants in the 4-H Fashion Review that are 13 years of age or older, enrolled in the Sewing Project, and receive a blue ribbon will be qualified to compete at Montana 4-H Congress in Bozeman (July 8-11, 2020).
Categories:
- Traditional- At least one clothing item newly constructed and worn by contestant. Multiple clothing items constructed to make a complete outfit are encouraged for youth competing at Congress.
- Refashioned- At least one clothing item that has been repurposed into a significantly different wearable garment or look. A photograph of the original clothing item is required to be brought to the judging.
- Home Fashion- Any sewed item that can be used around the home (i.e. potholder, placemat). This category is intended for youth under the age of 13, but all are welcome to participate. This is not a Congress qualifying category.
Narrative:
Objectives:
- To introduce yourself and your garment
- To focus on skills learned while making your garment
- To express challenges you faced while making your garment and how you overcame them
- To display your garment attractively
Tips:
- Describe what is special about your garment. Is it a vibrant color? Did you use an interesting pattern?
- List the aspects of the garment you want to include in your narrative. Then think of descriptive words to use to create a vivid mental picture.
- Look at fashion magazines or online stores for ideas on how to format your narrative.
- Use action words as much as possible
- Talk about the biggest problem you had while completing the garment
- Proofread your narrative and read it out loud to your friends and family to ensure it is easy to understand
- Add details about yourself such as your name, age, club, or school
- Some examples of action and description words: accents, coordinate, construct, one-of-a-kind, elegant, modern, pastel, vibrant, embellish, stylish, casual, festive, flatter, trendy, unusual

Quilt Show
Rules:
- Open to all Cascade County 4-H members enrolled in any project.
- Cloverbuds (Participation/non-competitive)
- Juniors: 8-13 years old
- Seniors: 14-18 years old
- Participants in the 4-H Quilt Show that are 13 years of age or older and receive a blue ribbon will be qualified to compete at Montana 4-H Congress in Bozeman (July 8-11, 2020).
- Judging of quilts based on the following:
- Design – 30%
- Construction – 35%
- Interview – 25%
- Presentation of Quilt – 10%
- Contestants will be required to present their quilt through a 1-3-minute talk to the judges. Judges will also interview the contestants about the work they have done on the quilt.
- Any size quilt will be accepted. Wall hangings and quilted garments will also be accepted.
- Quilts may be hand quilted, machine quilted, or tied. Participants should be able to explain and support their choice of quilting technique.
- All work must be completed by the 4-H member. Professionally machine quilted items
will not be accepted.
- By submitting a quilt entry, participants are certifying that they have competed all parts of the submitted quilt themselves, including the quilting and finishing.
- Cloverbuds may enter a quilt that they helped to make in any way.
Scoring
Participants will be judged on the following criteria.
Design
30% of score
- Is the quilt pleasing to look at? Does it have balance? Is the distribution of lights and darks effective?
- Do the border, binding, and backing complement the quilt?
- Are the colors harmonious and work well together? Are the colors appropriate for the use of the pattern?
- Is the complexity of design appropriate to age and skill level?
Construction
35% of score
- Is the quilt neat with no loose threads or knots showing? Is it clean and free of hair, pencil/chalk marks or stains?
- Is it properly identified (signature, label, etc.)?
- Do all the points and corners meet precisely in the patchwork? Are all the curves smooth?
- Do the pieces of the patchwork fit together smoothly and lay flat?
- Is binding sewn on securely so it will wear well, uniformly full or filler, corners secure?
- Is backing free of unsightly stitches, folds, or puckers?
- Is backing fabric complementary to overall appearance of quilt?
- Are the quilting stitches even and uniform?
- Do the quilting stitches complement the quilt? Is the quilting appropriate and adequate?
- If the quilt is tied, is the tying appropriate and adequate?
Interview
25% of score
- Shows growth in quilting knowledge and skills
- Shows increased participation in quilting activities
- Evidence of sharing quilting knowledge and skills with others
- Evidence of leadership development, citizenship, and community service
Presentation
10% of score
- Well-groomed appearance
- Poised, friendly, confident manner
- Speaks distinctly - loud enough to be heard, clear enough to be understood
- Thoughts expressed in a logical manner
