I.  Call to Order

II. Approval of the November 14th meeting minutes:

    Julie Ruff moved for approval, Kevin McPhee seconded, approved.

III. Informational Items

a. Spring 2019 Classroom Space – Norm Asbjornson Hall

b. Availability of classrooms due to NAH opening

i. NAH Room 165  (156 person cap)

ii. NAH Room 153  (48 person cap)

iii. NAH Room 149 (44 person cap)

iv. NAH Room 137 (122 person cap)

v. Spring 2019 has been scheduled, Fall 2019 is open

c. Spring 2019 reservations will be migrating from existing locations to NAH

b. Workload Policy:

i. Requests that units craft a unit wide workload plan to describe unit activities in areas of teaching, scholarship and service

A. align with university mission/strategic plan as well as unit’s academic plan

B. reflect programmatic & curricular needs

C. Be informed by discipline-specific national performance data and identified peer units

ii. Allows units to describe what they do in teaching, scholarship and service

iii. Unit workload plans must address the curricular needs of the programs offered in the department

A. student FTE’s and corresponding course offerings

iv. Changes incorporated into the Workload Policy

A. Purpose statement

1. Discussions of the purpose statement ensued.

B. Plan review cycle and revisions

Motion to delay vote until December 12th made by Kevin McPhee, seconded James Meyer, approved with 1 abstention.

c. Workload Guidelines

i. Acknowledge that disciplines address areas of Teaching, Scholarship & Service in different ways

ii. General Examples are provided

v. 2016 Workload Taskforce Report

A. Contains data (2016) regarding teaching loads across campus and comparisons to national norms

B. Contains suggested ranges of “in-class” teaching assignments for units granting PhD, master’s or Undergraduate-only, degrees

1. Note: effort spent “teaching” is likely the same, but includes more graduate student mentoring in scholarship than time in the classroom

VI. Election of Spring 2019 Chair-Elect

a. Needs

i. Right now: Chair-Elect for Spring 2019 and assume position of chair in Fall 2019

ii. On the horizon: Chair-Elect for 2019-2020 to be chair 2020-2021 (mulling over period)

b. Nominations have been solicited

i. Current nominee is Eric Austin (Political Science)

ii. One other nominated (Michael Brody) but not ready to assuming role next semester

c. Clem Izurieta moved for approval, Chris Anderson seconded, approved

d. Eric Austin is the Chair Elect for Spring 2019
