As the semester begins to pick up, it is important to stay on top of course work. One of the most beneficial ways to do so is Smarty Cats Tutoring! Smarty Cats Tutoring is FREE for first-year GEAR UP students. Tutors are available in many subjects, so there is almost always something for you! Smarty Cats offers tutoring by appointment or you can take advantage of their drop-in tutoring hours. It is never a bad thing to need or want a tutor, especially if you’re finding a class to be particularly challenging. Take advantage of free tutoring for GEAR UP students and the resources that are available. To find a tutor visit www.montana.edu/aycss/success/smartycatsGood luck in your classes!

TRIO Days Ski Trip

GEAR UP is excited to announce a partnership with TRIO for their annual TRIO Days ski/snowboard/xc ski/snowshoe trip again this year (snow willing). This event is FREE OF CHARGE for GEAR UP and TRIO students. The XC Ski and Snowshoe day will be on Saturday, March 2nd and will be in collaboration with MSU’s Outdoor Rec Program. The downhill Ski and Snowboard day is TBD, but will be on a Saturday or Sunday around the same time as the XC and Snowshoe trip. No prior experience, equipment, or passes are necessary. Space is limited! Please note that students can only attend one of these trips, not both. Also, a mandatory event or community service project is required to be eligible. Students who are interested in joining one of the trips should email Mackenzie Spence at [email protected]. Mackenzie will then send a CatsConnect RSVP link and students will be required to RSVP on CatsConnect within 24 hours or the spot will be given to the next student in line.

Newsletter Update!

GEAR UP and TRIO SSS will be combining portions of their newsletters and social media posts. As many of our readers may know, GEAR UP and TRIO are programs which serve similar student populations and have many collaborative events and activities for students. GEAR UP students will begin seeing a weekly “TRIO Times” with upcoming events and information relevant to the week ahead. There will still be one monthly newsletter from GEAR UP, which will have less information about events (since events will be shared weekly through the TRIO Times), and continue spotlighting students and activities, and sharing important information. To view weekly TRIO Times, visit montana.edu/triosss/. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to the GEAR UP office.

Meet a GEAR UP Student

Mckylah Sees The Ground

McKylah Sees The Ground is an MSU Freshman from Hardin, MT, majoring in pre-nursing. This semester, McKylah has found herself spending time outside of class with Navigators, a Christian group on campus. After college, McKylah hopes to be a Registered Nurse and to possibly go back to the Crow Indian Reservation in Hardin to help out. GEAR UP has been helpful to McKylah by not only providing books and school supplies, but by also being a resource on campus and someone she can talk to.
