Mission Statement Working Draft 2.0

Our task is to develop a short mission statement that will both respect and reflect MSU's land grant heritage. This mission statement does not need to set MSU apart as a unique institution. Instead it should capture the essence of MSU, which may be similar to other land grant universities. Characteristics that set MSU apart appear in the core themes and objectives.

It is a challenge to express all that we do in a few words. We welcome your suggestions.

Montana State University, the State's land grant institution, educates students, creates knowledge and art, and serves communities, by integrating learning, discovery, creativity, and engagement.

Core Themes Working Draft 2.0

According to NWCCU a core theme is a manifestation of a fundamental aspect of institutional mission with overarching objectives that guide planning for contributing programs and services, development of capacity, application of resources to accomplish those objectives, and assessment of achievements of those objectives. Collectively, the core themes represent the institution's interpretation of its mission and translation of that interpretation into practice.

Our task is to identify three to six core themes.  We currently have five ideas that are being considered as possible Core Themes.  Based on our Council discussions and input from the community, we are developing descriptions of each theme.  These are works in progress and can change regularly.  We welcome your ideas about these possible themes.

  1. Educate Students
  2. Creating Knowledge and Art
  3. Serving Communities
  4. Stewardship
  5. Sense of Place and Sustainability
