The PLACES program is dedicated to the development of systems for precise acquisition, analysis, evaluation, and use of land and climate attribute data. The overall goal is to provide land resource information needed for sustainable resource use.

PLACES goals include:
Advance knowledge of the variations in land and climate conditions that occur across managed and natural landscapes.
Explore economic and environmental benefits of this knowledge to the land and for society.
Develop and test agro-technology transfer strategies based on soil and climate resource databases and geographic information system (GIS) technology.
Apply field-scale GIS, terrain modeling, global positioning system (GPS), remote sensing, and expert system technologies with soil and climate databases to soil-specific management including "Precision Farming."
