Mary Murphy

Research interests: Dr. Murphy’s research and teaching interests focus on the experiences of women and the construction of gender in America, particularly in the North American West.  She has published works on gender and leisure in Butte, Montana; on the experiences of documentary photographers in Montana in the 1930s; on women artists; women and the meaning of quilting; teaching the history of U.S. and Canadian women; women's oral history.  Currently she is engaged in two research projects:  a set of essays about gender and photography which examines male and female photographs in "frontier" settings, and a book on the history of women and food in the northern Rockies and plains, including Canada.
