The Response to Space

When:

Friday, February 16, 2018 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm

Where:

Cheever Hall, Main Gallery - view map

Description:

Blending art and design, Seth Grizzle and Mark von Rosenstiel will lead a brief course exploring The Response to Space. Engaging in the abstract process of creating whimsy within geometrical volume, this course will be a hands-on celebration of the mundane. We will notice and respond to the habitual in our daily spaces: opening doors, turning on switches, hitting snooze on the alarm. This will change how you react to these minute tasks, guiding newfound consideration with your designs.

Seth Grizzle is an architect turned furniture and lighting designer and conceptual artist. His award-winning conceptual design studio, graypants, creates products, architecture, and custom installations, among other things, working in various mediums as well as discarded/reclaimed materials. Founded in 2008, graypants operates teams in Seattle and Amsterdam, solving problems and collaborating with clients and retail partners worldwide. Graypants is an innovative model for what is possible when designers return to using their hands, think responsibly, and craft outside the lines. Seth serves on the board of Friends of Waterfront Seattle and the Henry Art Gallery, contemporary art museum of the University of Washington.

Mark von Rosenstiel is a conceptual artist using mathematical algorithms that interact with and explore human relationships and emotions. Through feedback loops and technology he strives to reveal the middle ground people occupy -- the undeniably human place where truth is agonizingly close, but never touched. Mark’s site specific installations create internalized representations of the human experience that explore the boundary between observation and participation.

Mark’s work has been featured in galleries across the globe, from Seattle to Bangkok. He lectures on ideas of incompleteness, randomness, and scale variance in relation to art practice and the potential to discover truths by creative means.
