Legal and Ethical Considerations Regarding Suicide
- Wednesday, April 25, 2018 from 9:00am to 4:00pm
- Comfort Inn, Bozeman
Counselors, teachers, healthcare workers and other professional care providers will gain an overview of current legal issues following a self-inflicted death. We will discuss blame and responsibility; lawsuits following a suicide; Montana suicide rates; expected grief reactions; and the recent Massachusetts court conviction.
We will also focus on the psychological significance of suicide notes in understanding and explaining suicidal actions. Attendees will be encouraged to consider their own attitudes about responsibility for identifying persons at risk and about the limits of prevention efforts. We will explore questions such as: is “not reporting” akin to assisting in a suicide and what errors are care providers willing to make?
