International Day of Light Celebration to be held May 18 at Museum of the Rockies

The MSU student chapter of SPIE, an international society for photonics and optics, and in conjunction with the International Day of Light, will host an event to celebrate light and its role in science, technology, culture, art and education during a free, public event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on May 18 at the Museum of the Rockies.
It will also consist of displays and demonstrations from local optics clubs and businesses showcasing the importance of light. From 5:45 to 7 p.m., there will be a series of talks with members from the local optics community discussing optical phenomena in everyday life.
To coincide with the event, SPIE will also hold a photography contest and announce the winner at the event. Submissions for the contest will be accepted until Monday, May 13.

The International Day of Light, a program of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, is observed annually on May 16, the date of the first successful operation of a laser in 1960.
