Professor Quincy D. Newell from the Religious Studies program at Hamilton College will present a talk on her new work, Your Sister in the Gospel: The Life of Jane Manning James, a Nineteenth-Century Black Mormon. This biography of Jane Manning James details the life of one of the earliest known black members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS) and takes an intersectional approach to describing Jane’s experience as a member of the LDS church, discussing how her race and gender played an integral role in how she was regarded in the Mormon faith.
