Dennis Aig is a professor and professional filmmaker who has produced and/or directed films and videos in all genres for over thirty-five years. A former director of MSU’s School of Film and Photography (SFP), Professor Aig now heads the prestigious MFA in Science and Natural History Filmmaking in the SFP. His professional filmmaking experiences include work on Hollywood dramatic films, feature documentaries, PBS programs, commercials, and productions documenting major expeditions for the NSF and other agencies. He has also worked with web-based media. He is perhaps best-known for Shadow Casting: The Making of “A River Runs Through It,” the Deep Gulf Wrecks and WildFIRE PIRE video projects, and two feature documentaries he produced, Phillip Baribeau’s Unbranded and Charged: The Eduardo Garcia Story, which have been shown in theaters and on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime.
In filmmaking, "quadrants" refer to the four major audience demographics: male and female, under and over the age of 25. This seminar will explore the "fifth quadrant" that is especially critical to science filmmaking: the emotionally engaged audience of all ages and genders. In an age of publicly challenging relative "facts'," the need to harness emotional content in the service of verifiable scientific information has become a priority for both knowledge and survival.
