The final Honors College "Fridays@4" event will be this coming Friday, May 8th at 4PM, with Professors Blake Wiedenheft and Michelle Flenniken on the “Private-Public tag team for tackling SARS-CoV-2 at MSU". Dr. Flenniken will provide a brief overview of the virus, an update on the global pandemic and the status in Montana. She will also discuss her role in helping Bozeman Health establish a SARS-CoV-2 testing facility, which is important for both public health and MSU's SARS-CoV-2 research efforts.
Dr. Wiedenheft will explain how testing efforts at the hospital relate to their research efforts on the MSU campus. He will start by explaining what happens to the samples that test positive, and he may have some data to share that is "hot of the sequencer". He will also explain how they have been attempting to address the limitations associated with testing individuals and how wastewater testing is being used to monitor viral prevalence in the community. Wiedenheft lab members Drs. Artem Nemudryy and Anna Nemudraia will explain nanopore sequencing and graduate student Tanner Wiegand will explain what he has done with the patient sequences from Bozeman health. The conversation will then switch to wastewater projects. Artem and Anna will explain their data on tracking the virus in Bozeman's wastewater and Kevin Surya (a recent DIS graduate) will explain the phylogenetic.
