Domestic Violence and Firearms: A Public Health Crisis

Join Haven, MSU’s VOICE Center and Women’s Center for this virtual event focusing on the concerning risk that firearms present in domestic violence situations. This virtual seminar will be held on Tuesday, October 19th at 6:00 p.m. MDT. Julia Weber, Implementation Director with Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence and an adjunct professor in domestic violence law at Golden Gate University School of Law, will discuss the intersection of domestic violence and firearms, ways to reduce risk and increase safety when firearms are present, federal policy, including the so called “boyfriend loophole” and myths and facts about gun violence. A panel of local professionals in law enforcement, public health, domestic violence survivor advocacy and Indigenous Missing and Murdered Persons (MMIP) activism will address the ways in which their work intersects with this issue. Together, we will brainstorm ideas for preventing gun violence, fatalities and domestic violence in the Gallatin Valley.
In her role as Implementation Director with Giffords, Julia Weber focuses on identifying ways to most effectively implement gun safety policies. She is an expert on domestic violence policy who has spent her career working to develop and implement promising practices to prevent and respond to violence.
Prior to joining Giffords Law Center, Julia worked for over 17 years with the Judicial Council of California’s Center for Families, Children & the Courts, where she served as co-counsel to the Family and Juvenile Law Advisory Committee and supervised the Access to Justice Unit. Julia has staffed many taskforces and working groups addressing family law, intimate partner violence, and child welfare, and has extensive experience drafting and implementing protective and restraining orders and firearms relinquishment policies.
