Honors Presents: Dr. Devon Orme-Tectonics and Climate: Reconstructing drivers of long-term change on Earth
- Wednesday, November 10, 2021 from 5:00pm to 6:30pm
This presentation will highlight the two major processes that shape Earth's landscape: tectonics and climate. The first half of the talk will focus on these processes and the methods used to study long-term change on Earth. The final part of the presentation will provide advice on how to pursue a career in a STEM field.
Dr. Orme is an Assistant Professor of Geology in the Department of Earth Sciences. Her research utilizes the rock record to reconstruct ancient depositional environments and tectonic processes such as continental collisions and mountain building. She earned her BS degree from the University of California Santa Cruz, where she also ran on the Cross Country team. She earned her MS and PhD degrees from the University of Arizona, where she also earned a Certificate in College Teaching. Following her PhD, she completed a postdoctoral research position at Stanford University. She joined the MSU faculty in 2017. She has a passion for undergraduate research and tries to take students out in the field whenever possible--through research opportunities and course-based field trips. Her favorite courses to teach are Sedimentology and Stratigraphy, Geochronology and Thermochronology, and the Geology Summer Field Capstone, the latter of which is based out of the Tobacco Root Mountains just west of Bozeman each Summer. Her lab is the Tectonic Sedimentology and Thermochronology (TEST) Research Group, which currently has 10 students participating in research, including 7 undergraduates. Dr. Orme is an avid runner and cross country skier. She is part of the Bridger Ski Foundation Adult Cross Country Ski Team. She also enjoys hiking with her dog, Weston, 16 month old daughter, Morgan and husband, Drew, who is an Assistant Professor at MSU and an avid biathlete and cyclist.
