Description:

Music to Look At: The Composition as Visual Art is part of the President's Fine Art Series.

MSU Office of the President and the College of Arts & Architecture present a series of artistic and cultural events focused on the intersection of art and science.  All events are free and open to the public.

Composers create music.  In order for musicians to perform the music a composer creates, the manifestation of sounds have to be represented in graphics, music notation.  Some composers are still "old school", subscribing to hand written music notation with dip pens and waterproof ink on vellum as the old masters did.  And for that we are thankful.  Even composers who have embraced the convenience of music notation computer programs see the end product as visually intriguing and evocative.  It is not necessary to read music to appreciate its breathtaking beauty as pure visual art.  Come experience pages of manuscript extracted from original compositions framed and exhibited as visual art and, at the same time, experience what these framed pages sound like.   All of the subtleties of overtones, textures, densities, vibrations, nuances, and dynamics are spun into melodies, harmonies and rhythms: music, the science of sound - the sound of science. Featuring the visual scores of compositions by MSU College of Arts and Architecture, School of Music Faculty: Eric Funk, Gregory Young, Linda Antas and Jason Bolte.
