Rapid growth can be exciting. During that phase as communities begin to keep pace with their population growth many new businesses and housing developments can be constructed. City services may be expanded and improved. However, at some point growth does slow, and may even stop or decline as the resources are depleted or infrastructure is completed and can be managed with fewer workers. How does that impact a community?

Energy-impacted communities are often referred to as boom/bust communities. Although there may be rapid growth that slows somewhat quickly, too, members of these communities can be sensitive to the "boom/bust" terminology. Using "energy-impacted community" to describe towns with these experiences is more sensitive.
