In order to show and sell market livestock at the Broadwater County Fair all youth participants, both 4-H and FFA, must have seven (7) activity points turned in to the Extension Office or Ag Teacher by Fair entry deadline.  These points can be earned by completing any combination of the activities listed below.  

Please submit one form per market livestock species along with supporting books and documentation by Fair Entry deadline to the Extension Office or Ag Teacher.  See the attached instructions for details on qualifying points.

Don’t forget to turn in supporting documentation with your project book!  This means (as an example) if you attended a project workshop, that you must turn in a paragraph sharing the details of the event and what you learned.  Details of what to submit are included in the attached instructions.

 

Requirement Details

To show and sell market livestock at the Broadwater County Fair all youth participants, both 4-H and FFA, must have seven (7) activity points turned in the Extension Office or Ag Teacher by the Fair entry deadline.  

General Rules

·         Activities must be directly related to the 4-H project area or supervised agricultural experience (SAE).  For example, a sheep workshop cannot be counted for a swine point.

·         Points must be accumulated after the previous year’s Fair entry deadline.

·         Activities cannot be “double dipped”.  For example, if you are enrolled in both market sheep and market swine, you cannot count Livestock Quality Assurance as a point for both projects.

·         Activities including workshops, livestock shows and judging contests can be in-person or virtual.

·         A paragraph explaining your activity must be submitted for each point.  The paragraph should include details about the event or activity (location, sponsoring organization, length, etc.), what you learned and how you will use the information.  Expectations for the paragraph increases with age.  For example, it may be appropriate for a younger 4-H member to write 3-5 sentences.  However, an older 4-H or FFA member is expected to write more.

 

The points can be earned by completing any combination of the activities listed below.  

1.             4-H Project Book

·         Each activity is worth 1 point with a maximum of 7 points possible for junior members (ages 8-13) and maximum of 3 points for senior members (ages 14-18).

·         Each activity or “more challenge” can count as one activity.

·         The project book must match the enrolled 4-H project level.

·         All activities must be fully complete and signed off by the helper.

·         It is recommended to complete the activity chart at the front of the book to track the activities completed each year.

2.             Presentations

·         Each presentation is a worth 1 point with a maximum of 4 points possible.  Each presentation must be unique, meaning you cannot give the exact same presentation four times to reach the maximum number of points.

·         Presentations must pertain to the project.

·         Examples are school science fair projects, speeches or demonstrations given at the club, county or state level or presentations given to trade or breed associations.

·         Members must write a paragraph about each presentation and turn it in.

3.             Attend a Workshop or Conference.

·         Each workshop or conference is worth 1 point with a maximum of 4 points possible.

·         Workshops must pertain to the project area.  

·         Examples are quality assurance workshops, project meetings, showmanship clinics, Stockgrowers, Montana Pork Producers’, Rancher Roundtable Classes, workshops put on by feed or pharmaceutical companies, or webinars pertaining to the project area.  Livestock judging practices do not quality for points.  If there is a question about the workshop qualifying for a point, please get it preapproved by the Livestock Committee, Extension Agent or Ag Teacher.

·         Picking up your animals and tagging and weigh-in does not qualify, unless there is an educational component included at the event.  

·         Members must write about each workshop explaining place, time, who put on the workshop, and what they learned.  

4.             Competitive Events

·      Each contest is worth 1 point with a maximum of 3 points for the year.

·      Each contest or competition is worth 1 point.  However, the contest must be directly related to the project.  For example, an agriculture sales contest must be livestock related and not related to equipment or other products.  Contest examples include livestock, meats or poultry judging, agriculture sales, communication, etc.  Practices do not quality for points.

·      Members must write a paragraph for each event explaining place, date, what they learned, and how they did.

5.             Shows outside of the county.

·         Each show is worth 1 point with a maximum of 3 points per year.

·         Members must write a paragraph for each event explaining place, date, what they learned, and how they did.

6.             Help a new member.

·         Helping a new member is worth 1 point with a maximum of 3 points.

·         Older members are encouraged to help younger members in market livestock projects.

·         Leaders can help pair members up for this activity.

·         The younger member cannot be a sibling.

·         Members will earn 1 point for every 2 hours spent with the younger member.

·         Member must write a paragraph outlining their experience and what they learned.

7.             Organize or conduct a workshop.

·      Organizing or conducting a workshop is worth 2 points.  

·      Workshops must:

a.       Be open to all 4-H and FFA members in the county.

b.       Be preapproved by Extension Office and/or Ag Teacher.

c.       Be attended by at least two members and be a minimum of 1 hour.

·      Members must write a paragraph explaining their workshop and what they learned throughout the process.

8.             Classroom Instruction

·      Members in both 4-H and FFA can use Ag Classes as points towards project requirements.  

·      Each semester of Ag Ed Instruction with a passing grade is worth 2 points.

·      Classes must have units that directly relate to the student’s project area.  Classes such as Wildlife Management and Natural Resources cannot be included as they don’t relate to the project area.

·      Students must write a paragraph about what units applied to their project and what they learned.

9.             Independent Study

·      Members must be enrolled in Independent Study as their 4-H project to qualify for points in this category.  The independent study option is geared towards members who have successfully completed all three 4-H project levels and books.  

·      Members in independent study must design their own project plan, activities and goals.  They should be at an advanced skill level and something that has not already been covered in-depth in the 4-H project books.

·      Members should use the “You Decide” project manual as a guide in designing the plan. Plans must be approved by the 4-H Livestock Committee and Extension Agent.  The plan must be submitted to the Extension Office no later than May 1st.  However, it is highly encouraged to submit the plan much earlier to allow time for the Livestock Committee to provide feedback and to work on the project. 

·      A maximum of 4 points can be accumulated from an Independent Study project.  However, members could use the content of their Independent Study project for other activity points such as conducting workshops, doing presentations or helping younger members.

·      The member should specify the number of desired activity points for their chosen independent study project in their project plan.  However, the final number of awarded points is up to the discretion of the 4-H Livestock Committee during the review process.

·      Members must Include a write-up of the independent study project including full details of the activities, requested number of points, and any supplemental materials.
