Welcome Back Montana 4-H Volunteers

Hello 4-H Volunteers,

Welcome to the 2022-2023 4-H year. Thank you for providing endless opportunities to the youth in your community throughout the 2021-2022 4-H year. We have some new and exciting opportunities for Montana 4-H Volunteers this year. Montana 4-H is excited to launch the Volunteer Orientation Modules for all 4-H volunteers in Montana and host the Volunteer Institute in Billings in 2023. This is a reminder that all volunteers must enroll every year to continue to serve as a Montana 4-H Volunteer.

4-H Volunteer Orientation

What is the orientation? The orientation is broken up into 4 modules that are about 15 minutes each. Topics included are positive youth development, basics of 4-H, risk management, impacts of 4-H, and policy & procedure.

How do you take the orientation? The orientation can be completed online at your convenience through the ZSuite/Clover Academy platform. Your progress will be saved so you are free to complete it at your own pace. Clover Academy is on the left-hand menu in ZSuite. Please click on this link for the "How to Guide" for accessing the course.

Why an orientation?Providing training is part of our mission to support our volunteers. Providing an orientation will ensure that all volunteers have a basic understanding of what it means to be a 4-H Volunteer in Montana. Across Montana 4-H volunteers have asked for training so they can better serve the youth of 4-H.

Is the orientation required? Yes, all volunteers with Montana 4-H will be required to complete the orientation. Returning volunteers will have until the end of the 2022-2023 4-H year to complete the training.

Win a gift card or money for your club/project. Complete all 4 modules by November 30th and you will be entered in a drawing for one of six $50 gift cards or donation to your club/project. Gifts are provided by your Montana 4-H Leaders Council.

Montana 4-H Volunteer Institute

Join us February 17-19 2023 in Billings, MT for the Montana 4-H Volunteer Institute. Meet other volunteers from across Montana while learning skills to improve your 4-H program in your County. More information to come including a chance to submit a workshop proposal to share your skills with other volunteers.

Thank you for your time and dedication to the youth of 4-H,

Leadership Academy:  Online Workshops

Join the Montana 4-H Leadership Academy workshop on Sunday afternoons from 3-4 p.m. in 2022 and 2023. The leadership academy is a network of Montana 4-H members ages 12 and up who are interested in exploring and developing their own leadership skills while serving their county 4-H program in new ways.

Local county leadership groups will have an opportunity to join with groups from around the state as well as the Montana 4-H Ambassador Officer team, virtually and in person when possible, to work on skill building, planning and mentorship.

Each month the officer team members will be presenting a different workshop topic that they have found to be important as they have grown their own leadership abilities. This workshop should be paired with a local county leadership meeting to work on county projects that serve the local 4-H program and community.

County Leadership groups should plan to meet face to face whenever possible and engage in the virtual state wide workshop together. This time can be viewed as a leadership club meeting. County ambassadors can aid in planning and facilitating these local workshop meetings. The agenda is currently being planned.Zoom links for each workshop session will be emailed to county extension offices and can be shared locally.

Let's get "SMART"

Have you ever heard the phrase "keep your eye on the ball"? That's because you have to be watching the ball to successfully connect with it. It's the same with goals - the more focused they are, the more likely they are to be achieved.

Parents - you can help your kids achieve their goals by making them SMART - specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely. Here's an example:

A good goal: I want to win a blue ribbon in showmanship.

A SMART goal:I will win a blue ribbon in beef showmanship at the 2023 county fair by practicing once a week and attending any showmanship workshops with project leaders.

Service Learning Hours

If your school has service learning requirements, please talk to local school administrators about how to record your service learning hours and let our office know. We are happy to complete paperwork, etc., but can only do so if we know your school’s requirements and you prompt us via email, text, call, to do so. Many 4-H events would qualify as service learning!

Animal Resource Manuals

The Extension Office has a variety of animal resource manuals available for check-out.These manuals typically cost over $20 but are available FREE for your use.We have them for many animal projects.Contact us for more information.

Applications for 4-H Ambassadors Due

Have you ever thought of applying to be a Teton County 4-H Ambassador? 4-H members needed to be 14 by October 1 to apply. 4-H Ambassadors serve an important function in Teton County. The teens who become ambassadors work with the MSU Extension staff to promote 4-H in our county. The position is a combination of public relations and leadership service. Our current Ambassadors are Myles Allen and Golden Holmquist. They will remain on the ambassador team but would welcome more members.

The 4-H Ambassador team and individuals can set their own goals and develop a plan. We will work with you and your schedules.

Some of the main activities of the Ambassadors include masters of ceremonies for communication day and other events, fair duties and announcing, assisting with fair judging and mentoring new 4-H members and their families. It can be as much as you make it.

The deadline to apply for 2022-23 is November 30.We will accept applications any time between now and Wednesday, November 30.If you are interested fill out the application form and submit it to the Extension office.

Spring Creek 4-H Minutes

Spring Creek 4-H Club Minutes

October 18, 2022

The Spring Creek 4H club held it’s first meeting of the year at the Choteau Baptist Church. While waiting for all members to arrive, Nick Miller led the group with a game of “Two Truths and a Lie” for introductions and to learn something about one another.

Neither the 2021 President or Vice President were present, therefore, the meeting began with the election of officers at 5:45 pm. Members present were, Boaz and Polly Lytle, Addi Scott, Audrey Lobdell, Anna Paulson, Maili and Nick Miller. New members were welcomed: Adlai Sporkin-Morrison, Knox Myers, Ava and Isla Laisnez and Theo Lytle. Susan opened the nominations with a brief talk on the jobs of the officers and good qualities that they should have.

Nominations for President were Leah Paulson. Leah won without being contested.

Nominations for Vice President were Maili, Nick, and Anna. Maili won with 5 votes.

Nominations for Secretary were Anna, Polly, Audrey, Knox and Addi. Anna won with 5 votes.

Nominations for Treasurer were Ava, Audrey and Boaz. Ava won with 4 votes.

Nominations for 2 Recreational Leaders were Nick, Polly, Addi, Audrey, Isla, Boaz, Knox, and Theo.Nick and Polly won with 4 votes each.

Nominations for 2 Historians were Addi, Theo, Audrey, Adlai, Boaz, and Knox. Addi and Audrey won with 8 and 5 votes.

Maili then called the business part of the meeting to order. Anna led the American pledge and Audrey led the 4H pledge.

The June minutes were read by the present Secretary, Anna. Minutes stand approved as read with no amendments. Anna also read a very nice thank you note from Jane Wolery for her going away party and gift in June.

Maili gave the Treasurer’s report. The checking account balance is currently $1383.96 with no new expenses since the last June meeting.

There were no committee reports or old business to discuss. For new business, discussion was opened for ideas for a fundraiser for the Teton County Food Pantry. Maili and Susan described the previous Trick or Treat for the Food pantry to give the members some background. Jo Lynn gave a brief update that the Food Pantry is currently well stocked with nonperishable food items but would love some money to buy food as needed.

Many wonderful ideas were brainstormed by the members present. After much discussion, Polly made a motion to have a bake sale fundraiser, the motion was seconded by Addi. During further discussion on the motion, Polly amended her motion to have a bake and healthy snack sale. The amended motion was seconded by Audrey and passed unanimously.Audrey then made a motion to have the Bake/Snack sale during the Divisional Volley ball tournaments in Choteau on the evening of November 4th and the day of November 5th. The motion was seconded by Boaz and passed unanimously. Volunteers for the sale were Polly, Addi, Ava, Isla, Adlai, Theo, Boaz and will be assisted by Jo Lynn. Jo Lynn will contact the school to get approval and will then send out sign up lists for food and shifts after updating the committee members.

Other new business on the agenda was to select dates for our Fall service projects for highway cleanup and blue bird house cleaning. Due to the fact that this meeting was long, Anna moved to table this to the November meeting and adjourn the meeting. Nick seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.

Maili announced that registration for this 4H year can be done online at ZSuite and they due date is December 1st. Jo Lynn also gave brief instructions and handed out the Clover booklets.
