Description of Request

Submitted By: Ralph Johnson, Meta Newhouse-College of Arts & Architecture

The College of Arts and Architecture (CAA) requested space for Design Sandbox for Engaged Learning (DSEL) back in April 2017; upon several discussions with the client Space Management and Planning (SPM) tabled the request until a suitable space could be identified. DSEL's current space is classified as common space with a hallway bisecting storage for materials and the actual teaching space. Therefore, the layout is prohibitive for teaching as several students, faculty, staff and general public walk through the space, which connects two different areas of Cheever Hall. This is a proposal to utilize a 48-person classroom on the 3rd floor of Romney for DSEL instructional teaching and instructional lab purposes. The space will be designed to accommodate other seminar-style classes including those from CAA as well as others to keep the space active; DSEL aims to provide Interdisciplinary learning experiences for students (Example: Farm to Market with business marketing students, sustainable food & bioenergy students, and graphic design students.) A secure “tool box” area would need to be identified within the classroom so it can be used for other classes as well.
