Description

Submitted By: Roland Hatzenpichler, Department of Chemistry Biochemistry

The Hatzenpichler lab is an environmental microbiology lab located in the Chemistry & Biochemistry Building and currently has 8 members: 1 staff scientist, 2 postdocs, and 5 graduate students. At this time, we have 3 undergraduates working with us. My current space includes labs 152, 157, and ½ of 110 (shared with Martin Lawrence). Rooms 106 and 150 are used as offices. The former room can hold 3 people, the second 4 people. Given that I currently have 8-11 people working in the lab/office, this is not sustainable. Labs: Most importantly, my lab equipment has a large footprint.  Offices: each student has their own desktop PC or laptop they use for daily work.  At the moment, the bench-space in my lab can host 7 people, but I have 8-11 people working in the lab and plan to expand my research program and I expect my lab to grow to 10 postdocs/students (+ 2 to 3 undergrads per semester) soon. I also expect that later this year or early next year I will start working with BSL1 and/or BSL2 samples from human subjects and none of my lab space is currently BSL2 certified. The lack in lab and office space is pressing and the issue is close to inhibiting research success.

Approved By: Space Management Committee

Date: 10-04-2019

Space Management Committee approved the allocation of Chemistry Biochemistry Building (CBB) 107A to the Hatzenpichler lab. Instrumentation will be moved from room 157 into 107A to make more room for students and post docs. The allocation of this space gives Hatzenpichler the ability to expand his sensitive research needs and use this space as a BSL1 lab. Some of his projects are sensitive and cannot share space with other projects because of the agents his working with.
