Description of Request

Submitted By: Robert Walker, Chemistry & Biochemistry

Robert Walker and Erik Grumstrup requested additional lab space to allow for expanding their research activities related to new funding they’ve both received. The space in question is CBB 052 (total 724 sf), which was previously assigned to Tim Minton, but has now been vacated as he has left the university and taken another appointment elsewhere. This particular lab is ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulation) compliant with controlled access, but otherwise a standard lab. ITAR compliance is required for future components of Walker’s work. Initially, the lab space will be shared by Walker and Grumstrup for a period of 6-9 months. At the end of that time frame when Grumstrup has constructed and tested the instrument needed for his grant, it will move to a lab on the first floor of CBB where it will be used by chemical biologists and engineers, which will leave Walker the sole occupant of 052, utilizing approximately 50% of the lab. Once Grumstrup vacates his portion of the space after the initial phase of work, there will be an opportunity for another user to come in who may share some research synergies with Walker or that require ITAR compliance. At present, both individuals have shared lab space with others which requires a lot of coordination for the timing of the work that they do; specifically, due to different lighting requirements for the different work that occurs in those spaces it inhibits their ability to effectively meet the needs of their new work in the current space. The shared use of CBB 052 solves the problem and the timelines work out well.
