Description of Request

Submitted By: Stephanie Gray, Dean of Gallatin College

In response to local industry requests and continued construction demands on our community, Gallatin College MSU is in the process of developing a 1-year Certificate of Applied Science in Carpentry to be available to students in the Fall of 2022. Unfortunately, Gallatin College lacks adequate space for program growth despite their increasing student enrollment and our community's desperate need for graduates in trades. A new building for Gallatin College is at the top of Long-Range Building Plan, however, it is anticipated that it will be 2-3 years before this will be available, if at all. In the meantime, Gallatin College is in need of temporary space for the Carpentry program. Faculty Court building 9 was recently offered to Gallatin College as an option for HVAC program instruction. However, use of the space for HVAC purposes would require very extensive and expensive updates. Considering the current condition of the building, it has been determined that it would be better suited for the upcoming Carpentry program. Use of the space for Carpentry would require some renovations in order to make it functional for lecture and lab instruction. Updates would include a dust mitigation system, upgrading the gas heating system to an electrical system, installation of a projector for lectures and, as time allows, updated flooring in lab areas to remove trip hazards. This on-campus location will ease Gallatin College's burden of having to find an alternative and potentially costly instructional space and will help to enhance the student's sense of place and community. Additionally, Bobcat permit parking available at this location provides easy access to instruction for Gallatin College’s commuting students.

Resolution

Date: March 4, 2022

The Space Management Committee approved the allocation of Faculty Court 9 to Gallatin College for use by their newly established Certificate of Applied Science in Carpentry program.
