University Police Department Force Simulator: Records Management Building
Description of Request
Submitted By: Mike Stanley, University Police Chief
University Police Department (UPD) is requesting space to house their MILO Range use
of force and firearms simulator, an interactive video and graphics training simulation
system. This system is intended to be set-up, calibrated to specifications, and ideally
moved as few times as possible, but it is portable. Minimum room dimensions required
are 23ft x 20ft, but recommended room dimensions are 35ft x 30ft. This system and
its use will generate some noise as it includes both surround and directional sound
to enhance the realism of the scenarios. Officers will also engage the scenarios with
real world commands just as they would on any scene today. Having a small adjacent
space to cover classroom topics prior to scenario engagement would also be a plus.
The Records Management Building located off south 5th Avenue on the southeast section
of campus has emerged as the best option in terms of size requirements and ease of
access with adjacent parking. The building is unoccupied so noise will be a non-issue
in this location. Some consolidation and moving of records will need to occur within
the Records Management Building to clear the proposed section of space, and UPD can
then explore furniture solutions via partitions etc. to enclose the simulator area.
This is not a permanent solution for this simulator but has been identified as the
best option available at this time. This should be a viable option for the next few
years.
Resolution
Date: May 6, 2022
Space Management Committee unanimously approved the allocation of a portion of the Records Management Building to install the force simulator equipment as described above.
