This course introduces prospective school library media specialists to the theory, practice, and issues of reference and information services in libraries including digital reference services, information services to diverse populations, and print and online reference tools.
This course introduces prospective school library media specialists to the principles and techniques of cataloging and classification of books and multimedia library materials. Concepts and tools include Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR2), Library of Congress and Sears Subject Headings, Dewey Decimal Classification, and online public access catalogs.
An overview of trends, management techniques, and issues concerning administration of the school media center, including management and leadership skills, budgeting, facilities design, and evaluation techniques.
This course presents students, primarily prospective school library media specialists, with content and strategies for working with teachers to incorporate information literacy and media literacy into a changing curriculum and explore information inquiry models. Also included are topics affecting change in libraries and education such as: filtering, censorship, digital ethics, new technologies and other topics as relevant to inquiry and integration.
The purpose of the course is to examine the principles and explore alternative approaches to the management, development, use, and evaluation of library collections in school library media centers. Emphasis will also be placed on intellectual freedom, copyright (as applied to digital environment and duplication of resources), curricular involvement, and outside resources for collection sharing and development.
This course explores the field of childrens' young adult (YA) literature through reading children's and YA materials as well as professional articles and Internet resources. Through assignments and discussions, we will look at children's and YA literature field through the eyes of adults who will use these books with children and teens.
Students already working as non certified school library media specialists may take electives to fulfill the Internship requirement and these must be cleared with Dr. Ewbank.
591, if offered, will vary and may substitute for EDCI 598 (Internship) for those teachers already working in a school library media center. Contact Dr. Ewbank.
