Sympa list management commands are very similar to those used by list owners on the old list server with a few changes to syntax and format. A summary of these changes is listed below.The table that follows illustrates these by showing an example of the command written in Sympa compared with the same written in the old format and syntax.
Please refer to the Command Examples section for full command lines that can be easily copied and then pasted into your emails and used as a guide.
Please NOTE: Commands must be sent in plain text formatted email messages.
Summary of command changes
- Command words are in all UPPERCASE.
- QUIET is used to indicate that the subscriber will NOT be notified.
- DEL is used to remove a subscriber.
- Email addresses are NOT enclosed in < >.
- Names containing characters such as a period {.} or apostrophe {’} or comma {,} are NOT enclosed in double quotes.
- Names are entered after the email address.
- Commands are sent to sympa@sympa.montana.edu .
Please note that commands sent to listserv@listserv.montana.edu will continue to work, but we encourage you to make the change now.
