Shannon Weatherly Memorial Lecture Series

This lecture series is presented by the Women's Center in honor of MSU alum and Women's Center founding board member, Shannon Weatherly.  Shannon's compassion and involvement in the community continues to be an inspiration to others. As her mother has said about Shannon,"She felt a great responsibility, not only to her immediate community of friends, associates, and her college, but to the larger community which is humankind." Shannon's activities incorporated her education in areas including theology, history, sociology and psychology which propelled the ideals of feminist studies.

Shannon was tragically killed in 1982 while camping near Gardiner, MT. She was shot by a hunter who mistook her tent for a bear.

An endowment was created by Shannon's family and friends to bring nationally known feminist speakers to the campus. These lectures are presented annually and are free and open to the public. Past presenters have included singer/songwriter Holly Near, psychologist and author Charlotte Davis Kasl, activist and academy award winning film maker Stacy Kabat, comedian Maria Falzone, cartoonist Nicole Hollander, feminist religious scholar, Dr. Diana Eck, and author Dr. Diana Russell.

Join us for an evening with:

Lilly Ledbetter

Author and Activist

6:30 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2014

SUB Ballrooms at MSU

Join us for an educational and inspirational lecture by author and activist Lilly Ledbetter . After nineteen years of working at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber factory in her home town in Alabama, Ms. Ledbetter received an anonymous note from a colleague informing her that she was making thousands of dollars per year less than her male colleagues. For ten years, Ledbetter fought to close the gap between women's and men's wages in a historic discrimination case against Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. After being awarded a settlement for gender pay discrimination in federal court, the U.S. Supreme Court ultimately overturned the ruling. On January 29, 2009, President Obama's first act of business as president was to sign the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act into law. Ledbetter's story is both inspiring and educational, as her exceptional determination became a victory for the entire nation.

Join us in welcoming Lilly Ledbetter to Montana State as she shares her story, her insights, and her grit and grace with our community. Attend this free lecture at 6:30 p.m., Monday, March 31 st in the Stand Union Building Ballrooms on the Montana State University campus. There will also be copies of Ms. Ledbetter's book, Grace and Grit: My Fight for Equal Pay and Fairness at Goodyear and Beyond available for sale and signing.
