Machine and Shop Time Reservations

Machines and tools are typically assigned on a first-come-first served basis. However, reservations can be made through the M&IE Machine Shop webpage in the Reservations section. Students, who cannot make their scheduled reservation should cancel it as soon as possible. Reservations will be voided for students, who do not show up within 15 min. of their scheduled time.

Shop User Sign-In Protocol

Every student, who is entering the facilities for open shop hours will have to check-in with a supervising GTA or the shop supervisor. At check-in, students may be asked to identify themselves through their MSU CatCard or Drivers License. For safety reasons, students are not allowed to work unsupervised or alone in the shop at any time!

Machine and Tool Check-Out & Return Protocol

By the end of each working session, machines, tool carts and tools must be returned in a clean, functional and safe condition before students can check-out with the supervising GTA or shop manager. Not checking-out with a supervisor or leaving the works pace or equipment in an unsafe, non-functional, disorderly or dirty condition will result in loss of shop privileges.

Use of CNC Equipment

The above user shop authorizations do not include use of any CNC equipment. For use of CNC equipment please follow the procedure outlined in the CNC Policy section of this web-page.

MIG and TIG Welding, Grinding

The NAH 185 laboratory are not equipped for welding and grinding operations. The welding facilities in Barnh 132 need to be used. Please make arrangements to have a welding supervisor present when working in Barnh 132.

The use of hand-held angle grinders is not permitted in NAH 185. Angle grinding needs to be performed in the grinding booth in Barnh 132.

3D Printing of ABS and PLA

Students who require parts manufacturing by means of 3D printing shall submitt their part designs to the shop supervisor in native CAD file format either by e-mail or on a memory stick. The shop supervisor will review the design for eligibility and check if it is compatible with our 3D printer capabilities.  A design is eligible for 3D printing if it demonstrates either a decent level of multi-functional integration, or if it would be too difficult or cost prohibitive to manufacture by other means.

M&IE Shop Open Hours

The open shop hours are advertised in the Facilities Hours section of this web-page.
