Course Description

The focus of this course is the health of diverse communities and special populations from a public health perspective. It emphasizes a population focused nursing process and uses epidemiology and population-based assessment tools to understand the basis for interventions. 

Course Objectives: The student will:  

  1. Assess protective and predictive factors which influence the health of clients (individuals, families, aggregates, communities, and populations). (T1, 2, 7, 8, 11) 
  2. Assess the health and healthcare needs of a defined population. (T 2, 4, 6-11) 
  3. Plan for the health of selected groups using population assessment outcomes. (T1, 2, 4,6, 7, 8, 9)  
  4. Collaborate with key partners to develop an intervention plan that takesinto account determinants of health, available resources, and the range of activities that contribute to health and the prevention of illness, injury, disability, and premature death. (T2-7, 10, 11) 
  5. Utilize case management principles and knowledge of resources and subsystems within the health care delivery system to promote continuing and comprehensive community health care. (T 1, 5-8) 
  6. Utilize primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies to enable clients to achieve optimal levels of functioning. (T1, 2, 3)  
  7. Utilize evidencebased practices in the community setting with health teaching, screening, outreach, referral, and follow-up throughout the lifespan. (T4, 5, 7, 8)  
  8. Integrate traditional and emerging public health concepts into community health practice (e.g., epidemiology, genetics, health planning, health education, oral health,environmental health, globalhealthand disaster management). (T3, 6, 10)  
  9. Use evaluation results to influence the delivery of care, deployment of resources, and to provide input into the development of policies to promote health and prevent disease. (T3-5, 7, 9, 10) 
  10. Identify researchable problems that emerge from population based clinical experiences. (T1, 5, 11)  
  11. Demonstrate role development as a community health nurse. (T1, 5, 11)  
  12. Students will demonstrate behaviors that are congruent with the MSU Code of Conduct, CON Student Handbook, ANACode of Ethics,Scope and Standards of Practice, and Social Policy Statements in all class related interactions.(T 2, 3, 5, 6, 11)
