Course Title: NRSG 501 Teaching Concepts for Nursing Educators

Course Description:

This course is designed for students interested in nursing education (academic

or practice environment). The emphasis is teaching strategies and delivery of nursing education for diverse learners in a variety of settings. Educator roles and responsibilities are explored. The history and evolution of teaching and learning in nursing are included.

 

Catalog Description:

This course, designed for students interested in nursing education, emphasizes teaching strategies and nursing education for diverse learners in a variety of settings. The course explores educator roles and responsibilities and the evolution of teaching and learning in nursing.

 

Course Objectives

  1. Examine historical trends and current issues and their influence on the development of nursing education.
  2. Integrate principles of teaching and learning into planning and implementing a course or program.
  3. Evaluate a variety of instructional modalities, including distance-delivered instruction.
  4. Discuss the role and scope of regulatory, accreditation and credentialing bodies on the structure and functions of nursing education.
  5. Analyze roles and responsibilities for nurse educators in academic and practice environments.

 

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completing this course the student will be able to:

  1. Summarize the responsibilities of teaching, service, and scholarship in an academic environment.
  2. Develop a course syllabus.
  3. Design a teaching plan that incorporates class objectives, content, teaching strategies, learning activities and assessment methods.

  1. Reflection paper – reflect on the metaparadigm of nursing, nursing education, teaching, and learning. [CLO1]
    1. Example: Write a 1-3 page paper in which you reflect upon the metaparadigm of nursing, nursing education, teaching, and learning.
    2. Example: Describe the personal professional attributes you bring to the educator role. Do you have any weaknesses? What might you do to strengthen those areas? Make sure to read Penn, Wilson, and Rosseter (2008).
  2. Course design of a course within the student’s nursing specialty [CLO2 and 3]
