Course Description

This graduate nursing course prepares graduate nursing students for direct and indirect advanced nursing roles and core competencies in organizational and systems leadership. Emphasis will be placed on leadership, communication, collaboration, negotiation, team functioning, conflict resolution, and scholarship.

Course Objectives: Upon completing this course the student will be able to:

  1. Employ principles of leadership to develop and implement effective plans for practice-level and/or system-wide practice initiatives that will improve the quality-of-care delivery
  2. Effectively collaborate with intra- and inter-professionally to improve individual, community, state, federal, and/or global health outcomes.
  3. Develop guidelines to mentor and support other nurses to achieve excellence in nursing practice.
  4. Analyze historical and contemporary leadership styles and theories in relation to societal values, ethical decision-making, and cultural diversity
  5. Reflect critically on personal philosophy of nursing, and leadership style in relation to contemporary health care issues using professional writing skills.
  6. Evaluate the history and evolution of the roles of clinical nurse leader, nurse educator and advanced practice nurse.
  7. Analyze conceptual models of advanced practice nursing
  8. Explore the processes of role transition and role development from registered nurse to clinical nurse leader or advanced practice registered nurse.
  9. Incorporate professional nursing standards, including the AACN Essentials for Advance-Level Nursing Education, advanced specialty practice competencies, and knowledge of specialty organizations into leadership, education, and advanced practice roles.
