Course Title: NRSG 619 Advanced Primary Care Skills and Procedures

Credits: 2 (1 didactic, 1 clinical lab)

Course Description:

This graduate nursing course focuses on introducing skills and procedures that are commonly used within the primary care setting by the advanced practice registered nurse. These skills will enhance didactic content that is presented in the primary care series. This course will focus specifically on skills that are needed for the Family Nurse Practitioner Student. It will include didactic content and culminate in a 3-day hands-on skills lab held on the Bozeman campus.

 

Catalog Description:

This course introduces primary care skills and procedures commonly used by APRNs. These skills enhance didactic content presented in the primary care series culminating in a 3-day hands-on skills lab held on the Bozeman campus.

 

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completing this course the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the principles of wound and laceration assessment, treatment, and basic suturing and stapling.
  2. Successfully pass a pre-clinical check-off.
  3. Conduct a pelvic exam on a standardized patient model.
  4. Develop a systematic and defendable approach to nursing practice decisions in preparation for clinical rotations.

  2. Attend the entire in person skills days (CLO1)
  3. Successfully complete and pass all parts of the pre-clinical, timed 1 check-off (CLO 2)

Recommended Content: various special topics will be included to enhance the advanced practice nurse skillset which may include lesion removal, practicing a pelvic exam, suicide assessment, coding and billing, patient SOAP charting, communicating with preceptors and how to present a case, Microscopy- identify BV and Trich, integrating the Smiles for Life Curriculum for oral health assessment and hands on fluoride application, and detailed practice of the musculoskeletal system specifically focusing on the spine, shoulders, and knee exams, cover resources and apps that are helpful in the clinical arena, Time 1 pre-clinical check off of skills, Typhon training, how to present to preceptor, preparing for clinical, clinical resume.
